Starting with Kumdo

What can you expect?

The first class we focus on basic safety, how to correctly hold the sword, basic stance and posture, how to move and the first set of basic strikes. For beginners we have bamboo swords that can be borrowed, until one can be ordered and purchased. Clothing should be loose fitting and provide for comfortable movement.

What should I know before class?

All that we require is a positive attitude and a willingness to follow instructions. Since this is a weapons only martial art, and safety is of primary concern, attitude is the most important thing I ask new students to bring with them.

Do I have to be flexible or in shape to be able to do the class?

No, this is a very easy to start martial art. The only physical requirement is that you must be able to stand, walk unassisted and lift your arms above your head. Also people with arm or shoulder injuries need to inform the instructor as to what level of mobility they feel comfortable with.

Will I have to Spar with other people?

Beginners are not eligible to spar. Once someone has tested and demonstrated control and accuracy in their strikes they are eligible to borrow or purchase armor for sparring. Sparring is a part of intermediate and advanced ranks, but this is done in a fun and safe manner. People are not treated aggressively or asked to participate in activities they do not feel safe in doing.

If I learned how to use a sword on my own, can I use those techniques in class to show people what I can do?

We respectfully ask people to practice the techniques and strikes taught in class and observe the rules for legal targets, scoring, and etiquette as established by the AUSKF, AJKF, and WKA, this is for everyone’s safety and security.

While there are many different styles of sword martial art, and each one has its’ strengths and deficits. What we practice in the Dojang is recognized as safe, historically accurate and valid. What a person learns here should be able to be utilized world wide as kumdo/kendo is an international sport. Kumdo and Kendo should be taught in a manner consistent with international standards, so that a person practicing in one dojang/dojo can travel to another dojang/dojo and expect to have the proper technique and etiquette required to participate in a class, seminar, or tournament.
